ABOUT THE CONTEST

The STN Story of the Year competition recognizes the top broadcast segments produced by high school students that demonstrate extraordinary courage, grit, and determination in their pursuit of impactful journalism and storytelling. This award celebrates the bravery and spirit it takes to tell stories that challenge the status quo, amplify unheard voices, and shed light on issues that matter. Whether through investigative reporting, powerful interviews, or daring narratives, these stories spark conversations and inspire real-world change. News stories, feature stories, or any journalistic segment may be submitted. Any story produced for regular programming can be entered, as can any story created for an STN contest during the eligibility period. Film submissions are not allowed.

Schools will register for the Story of the Year category under the STN Nationals registration.

You must provide proof of permission if you use copyrighted footage of any kind. Stock photos, stock footage, and clips from other media outlets as part of a news source program can be no more than 10% of the entry.  Schools must email the licensing agreement to info@studenttelevision.com. Judges are allowed to question your content if they feel it is not in compliance with copyright laws.

Each entry will be scored by a professional with years of experience in the broadcast industry. Awards will be given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, and two honorable mentions. Winners in each category receive awards and recognition on all STN social media and the STN website.

All questions and concerns about contests can be sent directly to info@studenttelevision.com.

** Refunds will not be granted after your registration has been submitted. Please plan accordingly. **
