Contest Overview
STN Nationals is the ultimate stage to showcase the strongest work created in your broadcast or film class throughout the year. Unlike prompt-driven contests, these entries reflect the original projects your students have developed as part of their curriculum, whether it’s an impactful news story, a powerful documentary, or a creative short film. This prestigious contest celebrates the top student storytellers from across the country and gives programs the chance to earn national recognition for the work they’re already doing in the classroom.

$25 per entry
Each member can have two (2) entries per category
Team Size: Up to four (4) students for broadcast, up to six (6) students for film
Each student may only be a registered lead with one team
Entries must be original student work, produced and aired between July 1, 2025 and April 16, 2026
No entries from previous STN contests may be submitted
Cancellations and/or refunds will not be granted after your registration has been submitted.
Judging & Awards
Each entry will be scored and receive professional feedback from an industry judge
Judges will award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, with up to two honorable mentions when applicable
Judging results are typically posted 3–4 weeks after the deadline
Teachers will be notified 1–2 days before results are released
Winners will be featured on STN social media and the website

To maintain a strong, personal connection with the audience, only one student should appear on camera. Live Sports Event: Show your skills in real time. Submit an uninterrupted clip from a live-to-tape sporting event that highlights your technical production and storytelling. Based on a given prompt, the clip must include at least one camera angle, graphics, and a play-by-play announcer. Choose a section that showcases your best live production work. Original Segment: Create a pre-produced, standalone segment that could air as part of a broadcast show. This category celebrates creative content that doesn’t fit the structure of a traditional news package. Segments may be comedic, informative, artistic, or narrative in tone, but they should feel polished, purposeful, and broadcast-ready. Creative elements such as intro music and transitions are encouraged. Submissions must be uploaded as a .MP4 video file with cover artwork. PSA: Make an impact in 30 seconds. Based on a given prompt, students will create a clear, creative message about a current societal issue. Each PSA must include a statement of the issue, a supporting statistic, and a strong call to action. Entries may use live action, animation, or graphics to engage and inform the audience. Show Open: Start strong and set the tone. This category challenges students to create a dynamic and engaging show open that introduces a regularly produced news, sports, or feature show. The open should include music, motion graphics, titles, and/or visuals that reflect the show's brand and energy. It must be original, polished, and designed to hook the audience in the first few seconds. No full episodes. Only the opening segment should be submitted. Sports Highlight: Relive the action through powerful edits. This category features a fast-paced edit of game highlights. Include play-by-play or reporter narration, key plays, stats, and context. Story of the Year: Teams will submit their strongest story of the year that demonstrates excellence in reporting, storytelling, and production. This piece should reflect your program’s highest standard of work and can be any genre—news, feature, sports, documentary, or other nonfiction format—as long as it was produced and published during the current school year. High School Division III (Beginner - Level 1 Students Only)

The idea must be created by the student team and not based on any existing name brand. You may promote fictional products, school events, clubs, fundraisers, or even small, locally owned businesses (with permission).
