DISTANCE LEARNING IDEAS
Cypress Lake High School
Fort Myers, FL
Many schools have been seeking a standard that will satisfy requirements for Common Core and Career and Technical Education career pathways recognized in various states. The Standards, created by teachers on the STN Board of Directors’ Curriculum Committee, address the fundamentals for both broadcast and film.
DOWNTIME AND SUBSTITUTE ACTIVITIES
Produce a Classroom How-To Video: Have student(s) create how-to videos on something used or done in class. Whether that be on equipment, procedures, etc.
Create a One-Minute Video for Social Media: This could be a school event/sport highlight, skit, or POV interviews on something happening in school, locally, or beyond.
Create a Post for Social Media: Find something interesting happening in the school district and share a post about it. Must include a photo or video.
Write a One-Minute Short Film: Write a properly formatted one-minute short film script. Must be engaging and still manage to have a clear beginning, middle, and end.
Select 10 items around the school for students to record with a given compositional makeup.
Recreate a Movie Scene
Select a simple scene from a popular movie. Have students complete the processes of pre-production, production and post production to build the production.
Mock News Conference
Have students take turns at the podium speaking on an assigned topic. The rest of the class serves as the reporters asking questions in order to answer as many of the 5 W’s on the assigned topic as possible. This also serves as a great “get to know you” activity or class bonding activity. As the teacher I always go first to the podium to best model the format of the activity.
Lighting/Depth of Field Interview Location Scavenger Hunts
In groups of 3 to 4 students, identify locations for ideal depth of field and lighting both inside and outside the school building. I also have the students identify the worst possible lighting and depth of field locations as well. Students conduct mock interviews with each other using rule of thirds framing. They return and drop their clips in order of best to worst quality on their timeline. The subject of the mock interviews can be simple like “what are you looking forward to during the school week or weekend and why?” This activity also serves as an opportunity for intro level students to practice recording proper audio, etc.
Organize equipment room.
Develop a checkout system. Determine which equipment may need repair or part replacement.
Assist in repairs of broken equipment
Perform preventative maintenance on equipment (Ie: Tighting loose acres, oiling required parts)
