Contest Description

 

The STN Nationals are presented annually by Student Television Network in each of the categories

listed below. The awards are presented in recognition of excellence in scholastic broadcast television

and film. They honor the special skills and unique talents of broadcasting and film students from

across the nation.

 

The guidelines for submission of entries are outlined in this document and also in the document titled

STN General Contest Rules & Regulations. For an outline of STN Rules and Regulations that apply

to all STN contests visit the contest link on www.studenttelevision.org.

 

Entries that do not follow all the rules and guidelines are subject to penalty and/or disqualification by

the judges. If a judge feels an entry does not meet the contest objectives, or did not follow all the

rules and guidelines outlined by STN, then the entry will be penalized in the “followed directions”

category  and noted in the comments section by the judge.

 

All decisions by the judges are final. The Board of Directors of Student Television Network reserves the

right to change or amend these Rules & Regulations, at any time, and without notice. Winning entries

may be reproduced, broadcast or distributed at STN discretion.

 

Rules & Regulations

 

Entries are eligible if produced and aired between March 3rd, 2016 and Mar 1st, 2017. For the purpose

of this contest, “aired” means broadcast, cablecast, shared with an audience of students, or presented

to the community via closed-circuit, online or any other playback device.

 

  • Entries must be submitted online using the STN Upload System. Only paid STN members may enter.
  • Each entry costs $15 and must be paid with a credit card at the time of submission. A receipt will be instantly emailed to you. Checks and purchase orders are not accepted for contest entries.           
  • Only affiliate advisers may access the STN Upload System. Students are prohibited from accessing the STN Dashboard.
  • Contest entries are subject to United States Copyright Laws and may be disqualified for disregarding these laws. Please refer to our copyright policies on the contest link located at www.studenttelevision.org.

High School (Maximum 3 entries per category unless otherwise noted)

 

N1701 Commercial Spot

Submit a video advertisement that promotes a good or service at your school or within your community.

 

  • The judges will look for camera/direction, lighting, audio/music, talent, editing, graphics/effects,
storytelling/content, creativity, impact and followed directions.   
  • Maximum length: 30 seconds

N1702 Community Feature Story

Submit a non-fiction community-based feature story that aired as part of a news broadcast.

 

  • The judges will look for camera/direction, lighting, audio, natural sound, editing, drama/human interest
storytelling/writing, creativity, journalistic integrity/courage, and followed directions.
  • Maximum length: 3 minutes.

N1703 Humorous Segment

Submit any parody, satire, original scene, etc. designed to entertain or evoke laughter that was used in

whole or as part of a broadcast.

 

  • The judges will look for camera/direction, lighting, audio/music, acting/talent, editing, graphics/effects,
humor, creativity, impact and followed directions.
  • Maximum length: 90 seconds.

N1704 Lifestyle Reporting

Submit a non-fiction feature story based on arts, entertainment or lifestyle that aired as part of a

news broadcast.

 

  • The judges will look for camera/direction, lighting, audio, natural sound, editing, drama/human interest,      
storytelling/writing, creativity, journalistic integrity/courage, and followed directions.
  • Maximum length: 3 minutes.

N1705 Live Sports Event

Submit a 5-min uninterrupted excerpt from a live sports broadcast. Do not edit the submission

except to cut,compress and prepare it for entry.

 

  • The judges will look for camera operation, technical direction, talent, lighting, audio,                                    
graphics/effects, storytelling/content, creativity, complexity and followed directions.       
  • Maximum length: 5 minutes

N1706 Public Service Announcement

Submit a Public Service Announcement, with all original material, intended to educate, inform,

or persuade a target audience.

 

  • The judges will look for camera/direction, lighting, audio/music, talent, editing, graphics/effects,                   
storytelling/content, creativity, courage/impact and followed directions.  
  • Maximum length: 30 seconds

N1707 School News or Feature Story

Submit a non-fiction news or feature story, based on a recent happening at your school, that aired as part

of a news broadcast. Stories must be directly related to school life.

 

  • The judges will look for camera/direction, lighting, audio, natural sound, editing,
drama/human interest,storytelling/writing, creativity, journalistic integrity/courage, and followed directions
  • Maximum length: 3 minutes.

N1708 Sci-Fi/Fantasy

Submit a fictional story using a fantasy or Sci-Fi world.

 

  • The judges will look for camera/direction, lighting, audio/music, talent, editing
graphics/effects, storytelling/content, creativity, complexity and follow directions.
  • Maximum length: 3 minutes.

N1709 Show Open

Submit an opening segment that was used for your school’s broadcast with all original

footage and graphics.

 

  • The judges will look for camera/direction, lighting, audio/music, talent, editing,
graphics/effects, storytelling/content, creativity, impact and followed directions.   
  • Maximum length: 60 seconds

Submit a non-fiction in-depth sports feature that aired as part of a broadcast.

 

  • The judges will look for camera/direction, lighting, audio, natural sound, editing, drama/human
interest, storytelling/writing, topic newsworthy, journalistic integrity/courage, and followed directions.
  • Maximum length: 3 minutes.

Submit a non-fiction sports news story, reporting on a recent sports current event, at your school, that

aired as part of a broadcast. This is not a feature category.

 

  • The judges will look for camera/direction, lighting, audio, natural sound, editing, drama/human interest,
storytelling/writing, creativity, journalistic integrity/courage, and followed directions.
  • Maximum length: 90 seconds.

N1712 Weather Report

Submit a weather report that aired as part of your school broadcast.

 

  • The judges will look for camera/direction, lighting, graphics/effects/titles, camera presence,
look/style, storytelling/script, annunciation/inflection, accuracy/credibility, creativity and followed directions.
  • Maximum length: 90 seconds.

 

 

 

 

Middle School (Maximum 3 entries per category)

 

N1713M Creative SegmentMiddle School

Submit an original non-news video segment aimed at entertaining or informing an audience. Videos with a

humorous or dramatic plot are encouraged.

 

  • The judges will look for camera/direction, lighting, audio/music, talent, editing, graphics/effects,
drama/emotion/humor, creativity, impact and followed directions.                       
  • Maximum length: 3 minutes.

N1715M Public Service Announcement – Middle School

  • Maximum length: 30 seconds

 

Submitting Your Entry

 

All STN Nationals entries must be submitted online using the STN Upload System. After registration,

please follow the directions in your dashboard for entry preparation and upload.

 

If you are experiencing any problems contact the STN office immediately. It's your responsibility

to manage your own upload. We cannot make allowances for technical issues.                                      

 

 

All STN Nationals entries must be submitted by teachers. Please, no students should use the

STN Upload System. There is a $15 fee for submissions and must be paid by credit card.
