Rules & Regulations
The Fall Nationals are presented annually by Student Television Network in each of the categories listed below. The awards are presented in recognition of excellence in scholastic broadcast television and honors the special skills and unique talents of broadcasting and film students from across the nation. All entries are judged by professionals from within the film and television industry.

The Rules & Regulations for submission of entries are outlined in this document and in the document titled STN General Contest Rules & Regulations.For an outline of STN Rules and Regulations that apply to all STN contests visit www.studenttelevision.org.

Entries that do not adhere to the Rules & Regulations are subject to loss of points and/or disqualification by the judges. All decisions by the judges are final. The Board of Directors of Student Television Network reserves the right to change or amend these Rules & Regulations, at any time, and without notice.

• Entries are eligible for entry if produced and aired between May 1, 2011 and November 9, 2011. For the purpose of this contest, “aired” means broadcast or cablecast, or shared with an audience of students, or presented to the community via closed-circuit or other playback device.

• Entries must be submitted online using the STN Upload System at . www.studenttelevision.org

• Maximum of 3 entries per category may be submitted for the High School and 5 entries per category for Middle School contests.

• Each entry costs $15 and must be paid with a credit card at the time of submission. A receipt will be instantly emailed to you.

• Only affiliate advisers may access the STN Upload System. No students!

• Contest entries are subject to United States Copyright Laws and may be disqualified for disregarding these laws. Please refer to our copyright policies at .www.studenttelevision.org

High School Categories
(Note: Middle schools may NOT enter high school categories)

F1101 Animation – Short
Submit an animation clip that was used in whole or as part of a film or broadcast. The clip can be in any format such as stop-motion, Flash, 3D, etc...
• The judges will look for composition/framing, lighting, sound, motion, color, style, visual impact, creativity, complexity, and followed directions.
• Maximum length: 2 minutes.

F1102 Human Interest/Feature Story
Present a non-fiction story that aired as part of your news broadcast.
• The judges will look for camera/direction, lighting, audio, natural sound, editing, drama/human interest, storytelling/writing, creativity, journalistic integrity/courage/impact, and followed directions.• Maximum length: 3 minutes.

F1103 Movie Trailer
Produce a trailer for a real or fictional movie.
• The judges will look for camera/direction, lighting, audio/music, talent, editing, graphics/effects, storytelling/content, creativity, courage/impact and followed directions.
• Maximum length: 1 minute.

F1104 Music Video
Create an original music video based on any original or rights-cleared music. Please refer to our copyright policies at . www.studenttelevision.org
• The judges will look for camera/direction, lighting, audio/music, talent, editing, graphics/effects, storytelling/content, creativity, courage/impact and followed directions.
• Maximum length: 3 minutes.

F1105 PSA
Create a Public Service Announcement, with all original material, intended to educate, inform, or persuade a target audience.
• The judges will look for camera/direction, lighting, audio/music, talent, editing, graphics/effects, storytelling/content, creativity, courage/impact and followed directions.
• Maximum length: 30 seconds.

F1106 Show Opening
Assemble an opening segment for your school’s broadcast with all original footage and graphics.
• The judges will look for camera/direction, lighting, audio/music, talent, editing, graphics/effects, storytelling/content, creativity, courage/impact and followed directions.
• Maximum length: 45 seconds.

F1107 Sports Event Live
Present a sports segment of unedited continuous coverage. Must be 100% student-produced, including all camera work, announcing & commentary.
• The judges will look for camera operation, technical direction, talent, lighting, audio, graphics/effects, storytelling/content, creativity, complexity and followed directions.
• Length: 3 minutes of continuous coverage.

F1108 Sports Feature Story
Produce a non-fiction sports feature or breaking sports news story.
• The judges will look for camera/direction, lighting, audio, natural sound, editing, drama/human interest, storytelling/writing, creativity, journalistic integrity/courage/impact, and followed directions.
• Maximum length: 3 minutes.

F1109 TV Graphics Package
Assemble graphics used in your school’s broadcast including lower-third caption, full-screen chart or background image, statistical information and over-the-shoulder style graphic.
• The judges will look for composition/framing, lighting, sound, motion, color, style, visual impact, creativity, complexity, and followed directions.
• Maximum compilation: 2 minutes

F1110 Web Design/New Media
Design a website that allows your audience to interact with your program and also enhances professional growth within your staff. Sites should merge video, print and web design principles. Due to school limitations on student access to websites, this contest allows for collaboration between students and advisors.
• The judges will look for incidences of convergence, layout, style, sound, motion, color, visual impact, creativity, complexity and followed directions.
• Include your URL link when prompted in the online registration.

Middle School Categories (Note: Maximum 5 entries per category)

F1111M News, Sports or Feature Story – Middle School
Present any non-fiction news, sports or feature story that aired as part of your school news broadcast.
• The judges will look for camera/direction, lighting, audio, natural sound, editing, drama/human interest, storytelling/writing, creativity, journalistic integrity/courage/impact, and followed directions.
• Maximum length: 3 minutes.

F1112M Creative Segment – Middle School
Create a piece, with all original material, intended to educate, entertain or inform.
• The judges will look for camera/direction, talent, lighting, audio/music, editing, creativity, graphics/effects, storytelling/content, courage/impact and followed directions.
• Maximum length: 1 minute
